App navigation - is there a good solution?

Tab bar, nav bar, hamburger menu, top bar, action bar, dots and buttons. The types of core navigation an app can have are infinite, and some apps use more than one approach. Apple has stuck to the tab bar for years while Google has explored multiple solutions.

Almost every app also has some features that are not immediately obvious. Sometimes the app indicates this either by explicitly telling you the feature is there or by hinting at its existence with a subtle animation. Wouldn’t it be better to just show these features straight out? Or will that make the app less usable and more cluttered? Are we designing for everyday Joe or for our few but precious power users?
